Patterns seen in spider silk and melodies connected

Patterns Seen in Spider Silk and Melodies Connected

ScienceDaily (Dec. 8, 2011) — Using a new mathematical methodology, researchers at MIT have created a scientifically rigorous analogy that shows the similarities between the physical structure of spider silk and the sonic structure of a melody, proving that the structure of each relates to its function in an equivalent way.
The step-by-step comparison begins with the primary building blocks of each item -- an amino acid and a sound wave -- and moves up to the level of a beta sheet nanocomposite (the secondary structure of a protein consisting of repeated hierarchical patterns of protein assemblages) and a musical riff (a repeated pattern of notes or chords). The study explains that structural patterns are directly related to the functional properties of lightweight strength in the spider silk and, in the riff, sonic tension that creates an emotional response in the listener.
While the comparison of spider silk and musical composition may appear to be more novelty than breakthrough, the methodology behind it represents a new approach to the comparison of research findings in disparate scientific fields. Such analogies could help engineers develop materials that make use of the repeating patterns of simple building blocks found in many biological materials that, like spider silk, are lightweight yet extremely failure-resistant. The work also suggests that engineers may be able to gain new insights into biological systems through the study of the structure-function relationships found in music and other art forms.
The MIT researchers -- David Spivak, a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Mathematics, Associate Professor Markus Buehler of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and CEE graduate student Tristan Giesa -- published their findings in the December issue ofBioNanoScience.
They created the analogy using ontology logs, or "ologs," a concept introduced about a year ago by Spivak, who specializes in a branch of mathematics called category theory. Ologs provide an abstract means for categorizing the general properties of a system -- be it a material, mathematical concept or phenomenon -- and showing inherent relationships between function and structure.
To build the ologs, the researchers used information from Buehler's previous studies of the nanostructure of spider silk and other biological materials.
"There is mounting evidence that similar patterns of material features at the nanoscale, such as clusters of hydrogen bonds or hierarchical structures, govern the behavior of materials in the natural environment, yet we couldn't mathematically show the analogy between different materials," Buehler says. "The olog lets us compile information about how materials function in a mathematically rigorous way and identify those patterns that are universal to a very broad class of materials. Its potential for engineering the built environment -- in the design of new materials, structures or infrastructure -- is immense."
"This work is very exciting because it brings forth an approach founded on category theory to bridge music (and potentially other aspects of the fine arts) to a new field of materiomics," says Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering Joyce Wong of Boston University, a biomaterials scientist and engineer, as well as a musician. "This approach is particularly appropriate for the hierarchical design of proteins, as they show in the silk example. What is particularly exciting is the opportunity to reveal new relationships between seemingly disparate fields with the aim of improving materials engineering and design."
At first glance, an olog may look deceptively simple, much like a corporate organizational chart that shows reporting relationships using directional arrows. But ologs demand scientific rigor to break a system down into its most basic structural building blocks, define the functional properties of the building blocks themselves with respect to one another, show how function emerges through the building blocks' interactions, and do this in a self-consistent manner. With this structure, two or more systems can be formally compared.
"The fact that a spider's thread is robust enough to avoid catastrophic failure even when a defect is present can be explained by the very distinct material makeup of spider silk fibers," Giesa says. "It's exciting to see that music theoreticians observed the same phenomenon in their field, probably without any knowledge of the concept of damage tolerance in materials. Deleting single chords from a harmonic sequence often has only a minor effect on the harmonic quality of the whole sequence."
"The seemingly incredible gap between spider silk and music is no wider than the gap between the two disparate mathematical fields of geometry -- think of triangles and spheres -- and algebra, which uses variables and equations," Spivak says. "Yet category theory's first success -- in the 1940s -- was to express a rigorous mathematical analogy between these two domains and to use it to prove new theorems about complex geometric shapes by importing existing theorems from algebra. It remains to be seen whether our olog will yield such striking results; however, the foundation for such an inquiry is now in place."
The project was funded by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, a Department of Defense Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and the German National Academic Foundation.

The memory of last Ramadhan: Khatam Al-Quran ceremony

Assalamualaikum,

This year Ramadhan is going to end soon and Syawal is coming. And myself feel very bad as this Ramadhan I not done enough to grab the opportunity given by Allah to do amal. May this is not my last Ramadhan perhaps. As the memory of my last Ramadhan, which is missing this time is the Al-Quran Khatam ceremony at my hostel in Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Uniten. Each year we organize the event to appreciate those who do Tadarrus Al-Quran along the Ramadhan. It was a wonderful feeling as we manage to finish the 30 juzuk of Al-Quran in less then one month time.

Tadarrus is done by forming a group of 2 to 3 people as one person recite the Quran and the others check. This can improve the reading of Quran and tajwid besides act as a way to help those not good at all in reading Quran but have spirit to learn. As we students sometime have no time to read Quran during Ramadhan due to classes, this Tadarrus helps us to allocate time to read Quran.

The Khatam Quran ceremony is an annual ceremony at our hostel. Unfortunately this year we cannot organize the ceremony due to most of the junior students was on holiday. And we the senior students are having our final examination until last week of Ramadhan make the thing not possible to be organized. I was pretty sad about that. I really hope next year Insyaallah we will manage to organize it by make some early planning.

Usually for the ceremony, me and other hostel committee member with the guide of our former advisor Mr Nizam will cook ourselves for the Iftar on that day. It was not an ordinary experience for student especially engineering students. So it was a great pleasure and fun when we cook with all friends. For the last year ceremony, one of our committee member Azfar has sponsored one goat for the ceremony. So it offered us chance to see directly how to slaughter animals according to Islam as before this we just seen meats on the dining table. So this time it give us a great experience to work on the goat from the raw till the end. We really enjoyed the event.

Along with this post, I have inserted a few pictures of our Khatam Al-Quran ceremony during last year's Ramadhan. Hope it will be a boost for the committee of members (include me)  in charge can work harder next year to make this event happen. Ameen.

The Khatam Al-Quran Ceremony (2010)
Venue: Surau An-Nur, Kelompok Amanah Uniten

We started our activity as early at 8.30 a.m. All of us should gather there at 8.30 a.m. sharp behind the A6 block of our hostel. But that morning I wake up late and reach there around 9 am. So I missed the event of slaughter of the goat. So unlucky I was.

The time I reach there, they start to peel of the skin of goat and cutting of the meat has started. Although I am allergic to the blood, I still manage to chop some of the meats. I feel great of myself that time when manage to do it.

Slicing the meat into smaller piece

Chopping process. All brave guys

Once we finished with the raw meat of the goat. We moved to the next location which is  the house of Mr. Nizam to  prepare for the cooking process. There we divide our work into several. Some of us was stir the meat in the big pot (kawah) as the meet need to be stir along the cooking process to prevent it from overcooked or burnt. And some of us cut  the onions and other vegetables. And the rest was preparing the Surau An-Nur, our ceremony venue.

                                                          Tired!!!!!!!!

Here our event start. At around 6.30, the Khatam Al-Quran ceremony started.

It was a wonderful feeling when the event finished although have to do a lot of sacrifice before the event. It is always a satisfaction when we saw the good result after did a very hard work. Hope the next time we do, we can do much much better.

Persediaan

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim,

Good Quality of Bees

Bees is a unique creation  of God. The good quality that human beings need to learn from bees is bees naturally do not disturb other. But if did anyone disturb them, it will make sure they get the reward for that. Besides that, everyone is benefited from the bee via the honey.
We as human being, need to be like this. We should not disturb others life unnecessarily. But if people bother our life, give them some good lesson. Otherwise we should always give benefit to others all the time :)

Alhamdulillah, with the permission of Allah have started to make a post after created the my blog 3 years back. Hopefully have more time to share and learn from other blogger friends ;)
Tanda 100 hari menjelang meninggal

" Ini adalah tanda pertama dari ALLAH
SWT kepada hambanya dan hanya akan di
sadari oleh mereka yang
dikehendakinya...... Walau
bagaimanapun semua orang islam akan
mendapat tanda ini hanya saja mereka
menyadari atau tidak.....
Tanda ini akan berlaku lazimnya
selepas waktu ashar, seluruh tubuh
yaitu dari ujung rambut
hingga ke ujung kaki akan mengalami
getaran atau seakan-akan menggigil,
contohnya seperti daging lembu yang
baru saja disembelih dimana jika
diperhatikan dengan teliti, kita akan
mendapati daging tersebut seakan -akan
bergetar...... Tanda ini rasanya
nikmat dan bagi mereka yang sadar dan
berdetik dihati bahwa mungkin ini
adalah tanda mati, maka getaran ini
akan berhenti dan hilang setelah kita
sadar akan keha! diran tanda ini.
Bagi mereka yang tidak diberi
kesadaran atau mereka yang hanyut
dengan kenikmatan tanpa
memikirkan soal kematian, tanda ini
akan lenyap begitu saja tanpa
sembarang manfaat...
Bagi yang sadar dengan kehadiran tanda
ini, maka ini adalah peluang terbaik
untuk
memanfaatkan masa yang ada untuk
mempersiapkan diri dengan amalan dan
urusan yang akan dibawa atau
ditinggalkan sesudah mati.

#Tanda 40 hari

Tanda ini juga akan berlaku sesudah
waktu ashar, bahagian pusat kita akan
berdenyut-denyut
pada ketika ini daun yang tertulis
nama kita akan gugur dari pokok yang
letaknya diatas arash ALLAH SWT, maka
malaikat maut akan mengambil daun
tersebut dan mulai membuat
persediaannya ke atas kita, antaranya
ialah ia akan mulai mengikuti kita
sepanjang masa ...
Akan terjadi malaikat maut ini
memperlihatkan wajahnya sekilas lalu
dan jika ini terjadi, mereka yang
terpilih ini akan merasakan seakan-
akan bingung seketika...

Adapun malaikat maut ini wujudnya cuma
seorang tetapi kuasanya untuk mencabut
nyawa
adalah bersamaan dengan jumlah nyawa
yang akan dicabutnya.........

#Tanda 7 hari

Adapun tanda ini akan diberikan hanya
kepada mereka yang diuji dengan
musibah kesaktian
dimana orang sakit yang tidak makan,
secara tiba-tiba ia berselera untuk
makan...

#Tanda 3 hari

Pada ketika ini akan terasa denyutan
di bahagian tengah dahi kita yaitu
diantara dahi kanan dan kiri, jika
tanda ini dapat dikesan maka
berpuasalah kita selepas itu supaya
perut kita tidak mengandungi banyak
najis dan ini akan memudahkan urusan
orang yang akan memandikan kita
nanti.... Ketika ini juga mata hitam
kita tidak akan bersinar lagi dan bagi
orang yang sakit hidungnya akan
perlahan-lahan jatuh dan ini dapat
dikesan jika kita melihatnya dari
bahagian sisi... Telinganya akan layu
dimana bagian ujungnya akan Beransur-
ansur masuk ke dalam... Telapak
kakinya yang terlunjur akan perlahan-
lahan jatuh ke depan dan sukar
ditegakan...

#Tanda 1 hari

Akan berlaku sesudah ashar dimana kita
akan
merasakan satu denyutan di sebelah
belakang yaitu di kawasan ubun-ubun
dimana ini menandakan kita tidak akan
sempat untuk menemui waktu ahsar
keesokan harinya....

#Tanda akhir

Akan terjadi keadaan dimana kita akan
merasakan sejuk dibahagian pusat dan
rasa itu akan turun kepinggang dan
seterusnya akan naik ke bahagian
Halkum... Ketika ini hendaklah kita
terus mengucap kalimat SYAHADAT dan
berdiam diri dan menantikan kedatangan
malaikat maut untuk menjemput kita
kembali kepada ALLAH SWT yang telah
menghidupkan kita dan sekarang akan
mematikan pula...

Orang yg paling bijak adalah org yg mengingati maut. Semoga kita sentiasa bersedia menghadapi maut.
